Agadir is a Berber word also used in spoken Arabic, which means a fortified granary or village. Agadirs are a dominant feature of many villages in the southern region and the Atlas Mountains. The city of Agadir, with a population of roughly 100,000, is a regional capital. It is also the main market for the abundant agricultural produce of the SoussValley and a processing center for the fishing and agricultural industry. Its beach and the fact that it enjoys at least three hundred days of sunshine per year also make it an extremely popular tourist resort.
A 15-minute drive takes you to the Kasbah. The citadel atop a hill 775 feet high looks down on the city and out over the Atlantic Ocean. It was built in 1540 as a base from which to lay siege to Agadir and was later used as a defense against attacks from the Portuguese.
From here, travel to the Souk of the bustling Bab El Had, protected by the shade of woven screens.
Pause at the souk for a chance to take photographs before continuing to the New Medina. Designed by the distinguished artist Beato Salvatore “Coco” Polizzi, a lover of Berber culture, this district boasts inviting cafes, an arts and crafts gallery, a small hotel and workshops where artisans fashion treasures from wood, iron, tile and clay.
